Cluster C

News/Important Information-

After school support is available each day until 2:55.  We require students to be in Homework Club by 2:25.  We ask students to sign in and out when staying with us after school, this will help us keep track of the students and how frequently they are staying after for help.

Reading and ELA

Welcome to Cluster C Reading and English (ELA)! We are looking forward to a great year of learning, writing, and reading! The Reading and English (ELA) program at KMS is dynamic and ever changing. Our goal is to provide students with an environment where students are strongly supported and continually being exposed to new literary/writing experiences and deepening their skills.

In Cluster C ELA, students will be exposed to work in the following areas:

  • Fluency

  • Independent Reading

  • Study Skills

  • Fiction and Genre Studies

  • Comprehension

  • Nonfiction and Informational Text

  • Assessments

  • Reading Strategies

  • Informational, Narrative, and Argumentative Writing

Our ELA curriculum focuses on preparing students to be career and college ready as outlined by the Common Core. This year we will be focusing on these skills through Expeditionary Learning. These are self-contained modules that combine reading skills, speaking and listening skills, and writing skills. Each module uses a variety of protocols to help students gain a deeper understanding of  texts, encourages effective classroom participation, and practices various writing techniques. Our three modules are:

  • Module 1a: Civil War and Drought in Sudan

  • Module 3: The Life of Frederick Douglass

  • Module 4a: This is Your Brain Unplugged

Although this is not official homework, we strongly recommend that all students read at least 30 minutes a night.

Seeing as we have a lot of work to do this year, students need to come and see me as soon as possible if they are absent, if they are struggling to keep up with the work, or if they find that they do not understand the assignment/material. We are available after school for extra help.

We look forward to working together to make this a successful year for everyone. Please contact either one of us via phone, 357-9020 or e-mail, spetersen@sau29.org / abeaudin@sau29.org with any questions.
