Reading with Mrs. Wilson-Tucker

Welcome to Reading!

We start this month with our last Readcation of the year!  Students will have extra time for reading independent books because we will be taking our last two benchmarks for the year during this time as well:  AimsWeb and the NH State Assessment.  We look forward to beginning our final module of the year on Monday, May 21 when we will read aloud the Broadway play version of The Diary of Anne Frank.  Happy Spring!

This month we are wrapping up our Civil Right's Movement Module.  Students will be completing the book A Mighty Long Way for April 13 and we will take our final unit assessment just before April vacation.

February is here and Cluster F students are working hard delving into Module 3: The Story of the Little Rock Nine.  We will spend a couple of weeks learning background history to the Civil Rights Movement and will begin our next class book, A Might Long Way by Carlotta Walls Lanier on Monday, February 12.  This memoir will be our most challenging read of the year, but hopefully, also the book that makes the biggest impression on our lives.  Ask your child what they have learned!

Happy New Year!  This month in reading we take a well-deserved break from unit work to check-in with our reading skills and progress.  Students kicked off the month with a Readcation.  Next, all students will participate in the AimsWebPlus Winter Benchmark test as well as the mid-yer interim state test.  We will also review our literary theme work from December.  We look forward to our next module beginning at the very end of the month.

Throughout this month students are finishing their work with the novel Lyddie.  We have been practicing the skill of identifying literary themes. Our mid-unit assessment is scheduled for 12/4 and 12/5. The final assessment will be 12/20 and 12/21.  A few students are also reading excerpts from Dickens' Oliver Twist.  They will make brief presentations to the class comparing the two books on 12/20 and 12/21.  Happy Holidays!

We have begun Module #2: What can we learn about history from historical fiction.  Students are reading Lyddie by Katherine Paterson.  Our skills focus for this module is developing and defending literary themes.  We will conclude this module by our December break.

Happy October!
Students are wrapping up their reading of The Adventures of Ulysses and are moving into the second unit of this module of study.  Next up, students will read a selection of short texts that feature real and fictional heroes in action.  We continue to practice identifying main ideas and supporting details as well as comprehension strategies.  We will end the module on Oct. 27th with student presentations on personal heroes.

Get ready for the best year yet!

In reading, Cluster F students have begun their first Readcation of the year! On Tuesday, September 4 and Wednesday, September 5 students will take their Fall Benchmark Reading Screenings.  We are off to a great start!
