Vocabulary Development

Philosophy:

Vocabulary knowledge is the driving force behind comprehension growth and improvement.  Based on this, we believe that KMS teachers must enhance and expand their students' ability to acquire and use new vocabulary at each grade level.  As reading instructors, KMS teachers will foster an awareness and appreciation of words in all areas of literacy.  Vocabulary instruction will  be multifaceted as to assist readers in developing a variety of strategies to unlock the meaning of unknown words across curriculums.

Components

  1. Tier System Approach

  2. Constructing definitions and dictionary usage

  3. Analyzing word structure (Latin and Greek roots, prefixes, suffixes, compounds, inflection endings)

  4. Word relationships (synonyms/antonyms)

  5. Word History

  6. Word usage and multiple meanings: idioms, metaphors, and colloquial uses
